 I am continuing my research on genre! This time I am working on thrillers. Let's get into it.

Common Camera Angles, Movement, and Shots:

  • Close-ups 
  • High and Low Angles
  • Tracking Shots 
  • Overhead Shots 
  • Pan
  • POV Shots 
  • High Angles

Common Mis-En-Scene:

  • Low Lighting
  • Urban Landscapes
  • Confined Spaces
  • Technology and Surveillance
  • Masks and Disguises

Common Editing:

  • Jump Cuts
  • Inserts
  • Fade-Outs

Common Sound:

  • Silence 
  • Subtle Ambient Sounds 
  • Eerie Noise

Examples in Films:

  • "Psycho" (1960)
  • "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991) 
  • "The Sixth Sense" (1999)
  • "Prisoners" (2013)

I love this genre! I don't watch many thrillers but I love the conventions. I think this genre will really suit my pitch. The only thing about this genre that could be an issue is that most of the time there can be a lot of gore. However, there are some thrillers which do not have a lot of blood and guts. (such as Midsommer!)

Music Video: My research

 4EVER - Clairo Cameras: Slow zooms, fast pans, and short shots.  Editing: Fast cutting and grainy texture. Credit screen at beginning to introduce actors. Not full screen, cropped to about 2/3 of the whole available space.  Sound: Mostly diegetic sound throughout. However, in the first 30 seconds there is a mix between silence and the diegetic sound from the music. Mis-En-Scene- Costumes were natural and retro. Lighting was mostly natural light due to filming outdoors but occasionally cut to inside with dim warm lighting. None were wearing makeup. Actors did not put on a character and rather acted as exaggerated versions of themselves. Props included glasses, microphones, and drink cups. Setting was places around a college campus. Attention - NewJeans Cameras: Unfocused and sporadic. Many wide shots. Scenes were very short. Most shots were eye level angles. Editing: Quick and fast jump cuts.
